Writing historical fiction is proving to be even more fun than reading it. Creating characters and watching their development as they resolve sticky situations is a hoot. Doing the research that allows that process to happen is just as fun, following the branches where they lead, finding the lacunae that beg to be filled with inventive suppositions, stumbling upon whole new realms to explore — it’s history nerd heaven. And perhaps best of all, meeting the helpful archivists, historians, librarians, and local experts who give so unselfishly to writers has been truly humbling.
As I complete what I hope will be my debut novel, I will be sharing notes about the process, links to helpful sources of information and inspiration, and generally trying to give back a bit of what I have gained on the journey. Welcome aboard!
